Urinary Function Assessment

Uroflowmetry Test

Uroflowmetry is a simple, non-invasive urine flow test that measures the rate, volume, and pattern of urine flow. It helps assess how well the bladder and urethra are functioning.

What It Measures:

  • Flow rate (mL/sec)
  • Voided volume (total urine passed)
  • Flow time and duration
  • Flow pattern (continuous, intermittent, weak, etc.)

How Uroflowmetry Works

Simple non-invasive urinary flow testing

1

Hydration

Patient drinks water and waits until bladder feels comfortably full

2

Special Device

Patient urinates into a special funnel or toilet connected to measuring device

3

Automatic Recording

Device records flow rate, volume, duration, and time to maximum flow

4

Data Analysis

Healthcare provider interprets results and provides diagnosis

What Gets Measured

Comprehensive urinary flow parameters

Flow Rate

Speed of urine flow measured in mL/second

Voided Volume

Total amount of urine passed during test

Flow Time

Duration of urine flow from start to finish

Flow Pattern

Continuous, intermittent, weak, or other patterns

Purpose of Uroflowmetry

Used to evaluate various urinary conditions

Urinary Obstruction

Detects urinary blockages and restrictions

  • Enlarged prostate in men
  • Urethral strictures
  • Bladder outlet obstruction
  • Urinary flow blockages

Urinary Incontinence

Identifies causes of urine leakage

  • Stress incontinence
  • Urgency incontinence
  • Overflow incontinence
  • Mixed incontinence

Incomplete Bladder Emptying

Diagnoses urinary retention issues

  • Post-void residual
  • Urinary stasis
  • Recurrent UTIs
  • Bladder dysfunction

Neurogenic Bladder

Assesses nerve-related bladder dysfunction

  • Spinal cord injury effects
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Diabetes neuropathy
  • Nerve damage assessment

Advantages of Uroflowmetry

Completely comfortable and pain-free procedure

Simple & Quick

Takes only 10-15 minutes to complete

Objective Measurement

Provides accurate, quantifiable data about urinary flow

No Radiation

Safe procedure with no radiation exposure

Outpatient Service

No hospitalization required, performed in clinic

Conditions Diagnosed

Wide range of urinary conditions

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate)
Urinary tract obstructions
Urinary incontinence
Incomplete bladder emptying
Neurogenic bladder
Interstitial cystitis
Overactive bladder syndrome
Urethral strictures
Post-prostate surgery evaluation
Post-urethral surgery follow-up
Diabetic neuropathy effects
Spinal cord injury complications

How to Prepare for Uroflowmetry

Important guidelines for accurate results

Drink 2-4 glasses of water 30-60 minutes before appointment
Do not urinate for at least 2 hours before test
Arrive with a comfortably full bladder
Avoid caffeine and diuretic beverages
Wear comfortable, loose clothing
Inform doctor about all medications and supplements
Report any urinary symptoms before test
Inform doctor if pregnant or possibly pregnant

Important Reminder

Do NOT put toilet tissue in the device. The test must be done naturally without straining or forcing the urine flow. Relax and urinate as normally as possible for accurate results.
